JSP Summer Program 2018

For Fellows

JSPS provides "JSPS Summer Program /Program Guidelines FY2018" to all selected fellows. They describe both the benefits and services received and the procedures and responsibilities that fellows are expected to observe during their tenures. New fellows are requested to read the Guidelines carefully before they start procedure.

1. FLIGHT ARRANGEMENT and ORIENTATION SESSIONS &HOMESTAY ARRANGEMENT

To arrange your air tickets, please click on the below website and follow the instructions on the "Registration for JSPS Summer Program air ticket and individual data" sheet enclosed with the award letter.

*Please note that JSPS cannot reimburse you for an air ticket you purchase yourself nor can JSPS provide airfare in the form of a cash payment.

2. ORIENTATION SESSIONS

SOKENDAI (The Graduate University of Advanced Studies), entrusted by JSPS, offers the week-long orientation session specially designed for JSPS Summer Program Fellows. All the programs will take place at the Shonan Village Center (SVC), Hayama, Kanagawa.

Staying in/around SVC, some facilities (tennis, table tennis, indoor swimming, hiking, etc.) are available. Please note that only few restaurants are available around SVC, except one convenience store (Family Mart), which is 15 minutes away on foot. Nearest (small) city center is Zushi, which is 30 – 40 minutes away by bus.

1. Japanese Language Classes

To design the classes according to the level of your Japanese language, please answer some questions at the website: "Air Tickets and Orientation Session & Homestay Arrangement." by Wednesday, May 9th.

2. Sightseeing in Kamakura

Kamakura is a small touristic city, located near Hayama, Kanagawa. It was the capital of Japan eight hundreds years ago, and now welcomes more than 20 million tourists a year. You can find a number of shrines, temples, shops, and restaurants around the central Kamakura.

Bus will be arranged both ways (for a round trip) between SVC (Hayama) and Kamakura. In Kamakura, tourist guides will take you to the popular sites, such as Great Buddha and the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine. The languages of the tour will be English.

3. Poster Presentation

During the Poster Presentation Program on Friday, June 15, each of you will have an opportunity to present a poster on your research topic. Some SOKENDAI students will also participate in this program.

3-1. Abstract

Please submit the abstract of your poster, following the below direction, to Global Print Co., Ltd. (JSPS@globalprint.co.jp) by Wednesday, May 9th. All the abstracts will be combined into a booklet and distributed at the beginning of the orientation programs.
For details, please refer to the format for this abstract which can be obtained from this website.

(1) Submit electrically as WORD format. Write "SP18XXX (your JSPS ID no.)" in the email subject line.
(2) Must be typed in English. Maximum 200 words.
(3) Include:

1- Title
2- Names of Author and co-author(s)
3- Affiliation of author and co-author(s)
4- Host institution in Japan (Title and name of host researcher, and his/her affiliation)

(4) Select the field of your poster topic listed below.

1. Physical Science,         2. Engineering,        3. Mathematics and Information Science,
4. Cultural and Social Sciences,                      5. Biological Sciences,
6. Chemistry,                  7. Environment and Globe,
8. Brain and Neuro Sciences,                         9. Others (specify your field)
3-2. Poster

Please prepare your poster, following the notes below, print and bring it with you before the orientation programs. The poster should include a brief description of your current research agenda as well as the research plan in Japan.

(1) Print in English.
(2) The size of each poster board is 1,200 mm (height) and 900 mm (width). The poster should be fitted on the board. The poster can be paper or fabric.

SOKENDAI does not provide a printing service.
In case you must send your poster prior to the departure to Japan, please send it by post to the address below.
