Details

Before you start the procedure, please read the Terms and Conditions for JSPS Summer Program 2012 very carefully.

  1. Flight Arrangement
Flight arrangements are made by JSPS's designated travel agency, KNT (Kintetsu International), based on JSPS regulations. To arrange your air tickets, please click on the below website and follow the instructions on the "Registration for JSPS Summer Program air ticket and individual data" sheet enclosed with the award letter.
Please note that JSPS cannot reimburse you for an air ticket you purchase yourself nor can JSPS provide airfare in the form of a cash payment.

  2. Japanese Language
Intensive Japanese language training will be conducted during the orientation period.
The Association for Japanese-Language Teaching (AJALT), the provider of the language training, will send you a questionnaire in early May to see your previous Japanese language experience for designing the program. Please send the questionnaire back to them so that you will be placed in an appropriate class.
The e-mail questionnaire will be sent to you from the address jsps2012sp@ajalt.or.jp
and the subject of the e-mail will be [Japanese language training]. FYI: http://www.ajalt.org/

  3. Poster Presentation
The poster presentation session will be held during the orientation program for the purpose of enhancing your research experience in this program as well as exchanging information between the fellows. Please prepare an abstract and a poster of the research proposal in which you present your research plans in Japan, including a brief description of your current research agenda. For details, please refer to the announcement enclosed with the award letter.

  4. Notice on Payment
The allowances listed below will be deposited by JSPS into a bank account which your host researcher designates (or into your own bank account if you have one in Japan.)
    1. Maintenance allowance: 534,000 yen
      • JSPS will cover the following expenses separately from this allowance: hotel room charges at Narita and Tokyo, and meals and accommodations charges at Shonan Village Center.
      • For U.S. researchers, NSF, the nominating authority in the U.S. for this program, will cover one-fourth of the stated amount of your maintenance allowance.
      • For Canadian researchers, NSERC, the nominating authority in Canada for this program, will cover a part of the stated amount of your maintenance allowance.
    2. Domestic Research Trip Allowance: 58,500 yen
    3. Round-trip airfare in kind
After receiving your allowances from your host researcher (or upon confirming the remittance of allowances to your own bank account), please fill in the receipt using one of the below formats and send it to JSPS by July 27th by post (original; handwritten).

*For Canadian researchers, the format of the receipt is different. Please submit the designated format.

  5. Report, Mailing Address and Questionnaire
All the participants are requested to submit a research report, their mailing address for future contact, and a completed questionnaire.

    Research Report
The participants' reports on the results of their two months of research in Japan will be compiled into a booklet. Copies of the booklet will be distributed to our overseas partners (NSF, British Council, CNRS, DAAD and the Canadian Embassy in Japan), all the host researchers, host institutes and related Japanese academic organizations. You also will receive a copy in about six months after the program ends. Also, to introduce the program to potential candidates for the next year, we would also like to post your research reports on JSPS's Website.

    Mailing Address for Future Contact
Please submit your mailing address using the prescribed format along with your research report.

    Questionnaire
Please answer the questionnaire using the prescribed format. Your comments and suggestions will be helpful to us in planning the program for the next year.

    *Submitting Report and Questionnaire
Research Report and Mailing Address for Future Contact
Please submit them using both of the following methods.
      1) E-mail to the following address before August 17th: sp2012@simul.co.jp . Please be sure to include your ID number in the title of your e-mail (example: Report from SP99999). Please submit your report in MS-Word or PDF format.
      2) FAX a printed report to the following number before August 17th:+ 81-(0)3-3524-3135. This is to assume we can read your report if the emailed text is garbled.
