157th Committee on Structural Response Control and Monitoring

Aims and Goals

In the last couple of decades, the conventional concepts of civil structures have been changing. A variety of response control technologies against severe seismic and strong wind excitations have been integrated into civil structures to enhance their structural safety and sustainability. The development of structural response control has taken place along with the activities extended by this committee since its foundation in 1994. Recently, structural control technology has been moving forward to a new stage. This new stage is that of smart structures technology, in which advanced information, sensing, monitoring and material technologies are integrated into civil structures.

Given the situation described above, with the cooperation of engineers in a variety of fields, this committee is extending its activities toward the further development and application of not only structural response control technology but also smart structures technology.

Research Themes

1. Further development of structural response control schemes
2. Development of structural health monitoring schemes
3. Development of smart dampers and sensors
4. International collaboration on structural control research
5. Development of a smart structures technology education program
