Comments from Dr. Muhammad

1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

I decided to participate in the JSPS dialogue program for two reasons. Firstly, following one of the objectives of the JSPS program is to promote scientific advancement in Japan, therefore participating in this program gave me an opportunity to express my gratitude for being accepted as a JSPS fellow. Secondly, I wanted to share our enthusiasm for environment rehabilitation and conservation programs with the high school students. Through this program we hope it would enhance their sense of belonging to the environment, and increase their active participation in environmental conservation activities.

2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

Considering the level of knowledge of the student, I tried to keep my presentation in a way that is easy to follow by high school student. When preparing slides for a lecture, I tried to keep each slide to a few key points and provide more relevant more relevant picture that gives students more practical explanation. During the lecture, we also demonstrated the three dimensions data processing to attract the student to enjoy the lecture and inspire them about the excitement of science.

3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

I had a related experience when I was invited to give a lecture at another school few years ago when I was in PhD degree. At that time, some students have a major difficulty in understanding the content of the lecture, particularly scientific or technical terms. Based on its experience, I tried to speak slowly and clearly so that I would be understood. Besides, I used English in a very simple way and sometimes combined with Japanese so that students would understand the content of the lecture more easily.

4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

I was greatly honored by JSPS to promote scientific advancement in Japan through 'science dialogue program', and I was particularly so happy to be so warmly welcomed by the school principal and teachers as well as students. All students seemed happy to have met me and also to enjoy my lecture.

5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

Yes I feel it was meaningful. Through this program, I have learned how to explain my research work in a simple way so that audience would enjoy the content. Moreover, through this program, we have also discussed some practical ideas to promote the kind of activities that could help save the environment.

6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

This dialogue program has many benefits for students such as they had opportunity to learn/work through the challenges of a new area of science, students could develop self awareness and understanding of the present environment degradation issues-leading to a more active participation to save the environment. Report results from student questionnaires indicated that they were most likely to have learned about the environment-related lecture and most of the student will actively participate to promote the activities that could help save the environment.

7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

I recommend all JSPS fellows to participate in this program as this program would inspire the next generations about the great advantages of science in our lives. It is also an opportunity to tell people about the importance of your work. As for presentation, keep it simple and avoid using difficult scientific concepts.
