1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
I think that it is a wonderful idea to communicate current science to high-school students.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
Making the presentation understandable (all slides provide an explanation in Japanese).Making the presentation interesting to young students and at times funny.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
It is not difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students as long as a Japanese translation is available (slides/hand-outs/assistant interpreter).
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I felt very happy that students enjoyed the presentation as this means they understood it and found it interesting. I felt that I had contributed to their education and had therefore integrated further into Japanese society.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Yes. I believe my personal fellowship activities in Japan are more than just conducting important research. It is important for me to become a valuable member of my laboratory (being useful to the group) and also to integrate and communicate with Japanese society outside of the laboratory.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
Students now understand that the public can question modern science benefits directly with scientists. Students I hope will see that science can be very exciting and of benefit to the community and therefore may wish to become scientists themselves.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
Make the presentation understandable for high-school students (English dialogue is OK but include a Japanese translation visually or with the help of an assistant).Make the presentation both interesting and fun to keep the attention of students.
