1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
The title "Science Dialogue" itself looks very fascinating. It really attracted to me. Besides, it was the interaction with young people, who is going to lead the future science, society and economy. These are the people, who are going to determine the shape of tomorrow's world. So I was really tempted to meet them, share my experience and know their opinion on research in science and technology.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
I mostly paid attention to the simplicity in the material so that the high school students would find it interesting and could understand basic things of my research. Normally, it is difficult to explain major science of ongoing advanced research to common high school students. Therefore, I explained about the application part of the colloid and polymer science in our daily life such as toiletry products, cosmetics or food. I have shown digital images of few cosmetic products formulated based on surfactant solutions.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
I did not find it difficult to give a lecture in English. I explained everything in English first and in case of unclear situation, I re-explained things using less complicated words. Besides, my host professor supported me in the translation. He helped me explaining things such as scientific terminology in Japanese. If one use simple words and communicate with Japanese students with moderate speed, and explain things from viewpoint of practical application, it would be simple to understand and interesting for them.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
It was an excellent program. I personally enjoyed participating in this program.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
It was an opportunity to judge whether my research is the interest of common young people.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
Having interaction with researchers promotes their thinking level. Such program broadens their mind and encourages them for creation and innovation.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
I would suggest to make presentation material rather simple, to speak slowly and clearly. Pictures, movies or animation would be helpful. Demonstration would be the best way to make it clear to the students.
