Comments from Dr. Ren

1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

When I was a high school student in China, I seldom had a chance to speak with foreign researchers. I think that scientific researcher's talk is significant and heuristic to young students. Now JSPS provides a good format for Japanese youngsters to communicate with JSPS Fellow face to face. So I am very glad to participate in such a Science Dialogue Program.

2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

I must collect and create many cartoon materials which can be understood easily. I have to consider carefully on how to explain the high-tech topic in simple English. I pay more attention to the logic of my talk.

3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

Yes. Since both the specialty knowledge and English of high school students are limited, I must pay more attention to which English words are suitable for them, I must stress on the key points again and again to ensure that the students are not being lost. It is better to share and discuss the slides of your PowerPoint with the relevant teachers in that school in advance. If it is possible, giving a talk together with a Japanese colleague will be more helpful.

4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

I like this program very much. It is a good experience for me to learn about the education system of Japanese high school.

5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

Yes definitely. It is really very interesting and meaningful, not only to students, but also to me. It is my pleasure to share my research work and experience with Japanese young students.

6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

It is a good format for young students to communicate with young researchers. As usual, JSPS Fellows will introduce their educational/professional experience. To some degree it will promote the students to consider or foresee their futures. This will be beneficial to them.

7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

Always speak English slowly and use simple English words. Stress on the key points and logic of your talk again and again to ensure that the students are not being lost.
