Comments from Dr. Shah

1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

It is an excellent program run by JSPS. Previously I earned great experience in communicating with the young students. Based on their comments I not only improved my communication skills but did a lot in refining my experimental work. As a consequence, I considered this opportunity as a great mean of getting further experience in informing the youth about my research and future plans in Japan.

2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

Both sections of my presentation have been given equal importance. Introduction about Pakistan has shown the real picture of my country to the Japanese students and teachers and my research outline has shown them the importance of structural health monitoring and rehabilitation using non-linear ultrasonic testing technique.

3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

Although it was a difficult task to do so. But based on my previous experience I added at the end of each slide Japanese meanings to difficult English words. This act has helped me a lot in informing the students about my view point. I think in future other JSPS fellows can also use this way for effective delivering of the lecture in English language to Japanese students.

4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

It was an excellent experience for me. This was my second time to communicate with the Japanese high school students. I closely examined the Japanese high school system at two different places of Japan. I think the students are very hard working and obedient. They have shy nature but they have a strong motivation towards learning new things and exchanging ideas. Bundle of thanks and appreciation are also due to the JSPS team in arranging such a great program.

5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

It was the most meaningful event for during my stay in Japan as JSPS fellow.

6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

Many people have a misconception that there are no or few unsolved questions in mathematics, or that mathematics is too complicated to be interesting. My hope is that students realize that just the opposite is true - mathematics is full of interesting problems that have not been solved, and we need more mathematicians working on them!

7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

I will recommend everybody to participate in JSPS science dialogue program as the excitement and experience lay under this event are great. I think such events should never be missed if offered.
