Comments from Dr. Sim

1. What prompted you decide to participate in the “JSPS Science Dialogue” program?

I thought it is good to let more Japanese high school students know more about my home country and the fun in interacting with foreigners.

2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

I gave greatest attention in preparing my powerpoint slides.

3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

I felt that most students did not really understand my English, so I switched to talking mostly in Japanese in the latter part of my lecture. As most Japanese students can read English, I think it helps to show keywords in English to students through powerpoint slides.

4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

The principal and teachers of Takeo High School were very helpful in giving me all their support.

5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

While the Science Dialogue Program is not directly related to my research, I think it is still good to visit Japanese high schools and interact with the students once in a while.

6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

I think the students benefited from the program by interacting with foreigners like me and by knowing more about foreign countries and also our research activities.

7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

Personally, I think that using powerpoint slides to show pictures or diagrams is a good way to help students understand the lecture more easily.
