1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
To my surprise, I got e-mail from JSPS to give one more lecture to another Super Science High School; 6 months since the first lecture. I decided without second thought to accept this opportunity (actually, I still need to ask permission from my sensei first). I still remember the good memory of how enjoy the lecture was and how enthusiasm of the students were at last time that why I would love to grab this chance again.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
I used the same slides as the previous lecture (contain a lot of figures and less technical terms) with some additional pages. I asked my colleague to prepare a few pages of slide to summarize the important messages in Japanese and inserted them between my subtopics. I hoped that these additional slides could help students to follow my lecture.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
Most of students have problem to listen and understand unfamiliar accent or dialect. Speak slowly and repeat the sentences as necessary could help them guess what you are trying to communicate.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
For this second time, I had less nervous but still enjoy and happy to see the students willing to learn the difficult subjects with their non mother-language, English.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Delivery the research subjects to students or a group of non-scientific people is a challenging task. This experience is valuable for me to improve my communication and presentation skills.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
If we can make an impression on the presentation, it might inspire the students to interest in sciences and pursuing in the research field in the future.
Beside sciences, the students also learned about overseas culture by direct contact with the native fellows from various countries. This program provides a chance for the students to practice their English skills as well.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
For future participants, you should look for good advice from the comments of previous lecturers in Science Dialogue Program webpage. Please study them before starting to prepare a presentation file. You might get some useful minor details about presentation for each school in the webpage as well.
