1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
Earlier I had an experience of this program and moreover I am interested to know more about the Japanese culture and inquisitive with high school students. This program gave me better chance to introduce sphere of science, my country and research. JSPS take care of fellows from time to time and introduce many things to novice during e-orientation. This was a perfect occasion for me to contribute toward “JSPS Science dialogue mission” personally.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
Well, it is important while preparing the slides to make simple and easy presentation, for example making more of figures and flow charts, rather then textual format. My talk was on more of plant viruses and impact of viruses on sustainable agriculture. Since, the terms used in Phytoviruses to those who aren’t familiar with basic Biology/genetics, is difficult? Moreover, handouts of my presentation were already reached two weeks earlier. Time to time I sent them abstracts, key words etc. During my talk, I frequently used Japanese slang’s to attentive the audience. Moreover, few of the slides related to my research work were quite difficult to explain and understand but with the help of Mr. Ito, who translated few slides in Japanese, talk was quite successful.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
I didn’t feel any difficulty during my talk. Though as I mentioned in item number 2 i have shown slides with subheads, interesting facts about plant viruses.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I was delighted to be in Hachinohe Kita high school. The organization of the program was ideal. I was also glee to meet the staff of school and JSPS official personalities of Mr. Hisashi Kato (Head of Overseas Fellowship Division) and Y. Yonehara. Besides, I also felt that it’s good for researchers to get out of the lab. from time to time and explain the students that whatever theoretically they are learning about science is directly applied on research in higher level of studies and is an outcome of science.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Although it’s not in part of fellowship activities but obviously it was an excellent opportunity for me to participate and have a different kind of experience. So, I will counsel other JSPS fellows to participate in this science dialogue program. I always persuade and encourage the young students towards monarchy of science and to widen their understanding. Overall it was a lovely experience.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
Besides, mentioned in item number 4 it’s a good chance for high school students to come forward, as I noticed that students were introverted while asking questions.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
I encourage JSPS fellows that it’s a fantastic experience.
