Past Lectures: Case introduction

<   Past Lectures   >  Dr. Baiotti

Commnents from Dr. Baiotti

1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

Several motivations to introduce motivated students to interesting frontline research to get to know the Japanese school system; to increase the scientific sensibility of the public; to give something back to JSPS who is financing my research…..

2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

That it was possible to understand for people who could know almost nothing of astronomy / astrophysics.

3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

Actually I had the impression that they understood only some part of my English speech, so I tried to use as many Japanese words as possible. The best thing would probably be to speak in Japanese with a few English sentences…..

4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

I was very happy to meet the staff and students there, who were all very kind and responsible. On top of this, 大月 is a nice city…..

5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

Yes, I think this is now an unforgettable experience in my JSPS activities.

6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

I hope they are stimulated to ask even more questions in the future and that some of them decide for a science career. I also hope they learnt some English from me and something about Italy.

7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

It is fundamental to speak very slowly to use as many Japanese words as possible, to have slides also in Japanese and with a lot of pictures and to stimulate the studies attention with questions and so on.
