Comments from Dr. Iskhaq Iskandar

1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

There are many reasons prompted me to participate in this program. I believe that this is one of the important things I, scientists, should do as an outreach activity. By giving a lecture to the students, I can share my knowledge as well as introduce my home country. I also believe that this is a good opportunity for me to communicate and interact with Japanese students and teachers.

2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

My greatest attention is how to organize the material and deliver it to student in such away that the student can easily understand the content. After discussion with the schoolteachers, I prepared my lecture and add some materials suggested by the schoolteacher. During the lecture, I ask student to stop my presentation if they have a question. I tried to speak slowly so that the students can understand the lecture.

3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

I found that students are rather shy to interact and communicate through English. During the discussion, however, I was very much impressed that there were many questions. The schoolteacher and my colleague helped students their questions into English. If the students do not understand my answer to their question, the schoolteacher helped me to translate into Japanese.

4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

I was very happy to participate in this program. Within a limited time for communication and discussion with the students, I hope that they could understand my lecture and give more attention on the global warming issue and its impacts on human life.

5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

This is my first experience to have an outreach activity in addition to scientific works. By participating in this program I had a new experience how to organize and deliver a presentation to high school students whom have quite different background and interest in science.

6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

They had an opportunity to learn a new knowledge in science, in particular the current issues in the environmental studies and their possible impact on human activities. Moreover, they also have a chance to learn culture of foreign countries. In addition, through this program the students can have more experience to practice English.

7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

Doing an outreach activity is a challenge for us, as scientist. And I found that this program is very much useful for JSPS fellows to start an outreach activity. I suggest the JSPS fellows to take this opportunity to introduce their research to common people, in particular students and schoolteachers.
