1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
Previously I had experience of giving scientific lectures for kids in Japan and always excited to utilize such opportunity. I speak Japanese and enjoy interaction with the students.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
I have tried to make it as easy-to-catch as possible. Incorporated several movies and inserted a number of short Japanese remarks, explaining the most difficult parts. After the lecture with the help of host researcher we have conducted a set of experiments, illustrating the phenomena of the insect. I think it was the most important part of the event, since I could actually interact with the students and explain the remaining unclear parts of the story presented in English.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
I found that English was the most difficult part of the lecture for the students. I would advice to allow using Japanese headings for the Power Point slides and speaking Japanese for the researchers who can do it. My students were very clever and active in personal after-lecture discussion indeed! Once they found I speak Japanese, it facilitated the communication and a lot of scientifically interesting questions have been asked!
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
It was a very interesting event and I will be pleased to participate in other programs like this one!
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Yes, it was. I like teaching. The students in the Junior High and High Schools are the best referee for the teaching ability of a scientist! I have also been introduced to the culture of the one of the best schools in Shizuoka and it was very interesting indeed.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
I hope, with the lecture, they have discovered a new amazing biological phenomenon and also had a chance to try their ability in communication with a foreigner in English.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
Very interesting experience! Be sure to try it.
