Comments from Dr. Hernandez

1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

The JSPS Orientation introduced the concept of the Science Dialogue Program and it appealed to me.

2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

In trying to make the lecture easy to understand by not using technical jargon, and using examples that the students could relate to.

3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

It is a challenge to prepare a lecture to a non-English speaking audience because you have to be aware of the tone and speed at which one must speak. However, it is no impossible and the end result is that the students walk away having learned, at the very least, 1 thing.

4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

I am really happy that I participated, and my impression after it is that it is a fantastic program that will undoubtedly achieve great results in the not so distant future.

5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

Yes. It gave me an opportunity to talk to a fresh audience about something that I am passionate about.

6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

My hope is that they learned a little bit about the amazing diversity of parasite life histories, and how inter-related all living things are in nature.

7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

If you can, translate a few of the slides into Japanese with the aid of your host or a friend.
