1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
Young students are future scientists, therefore we need to convey our thoughts and ideas to them. Besides, it is a good way to give something back to the Japanese community.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
To make the presentation interesting and attract students' attention.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
Teacher (Ms Komiya) told me that students were frustrated because the earlier lecturers send by JSPS could only speak in English and they can't catch the content much. She asked if I could talk in Japanese and so I did. The students responded very well.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I feel happy and would love to do it again.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Yes
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
First, I think they were surprised to hear my talk in Japanese. Two of the students wanted to know how I could speak Japanese so fluently. Others, were interested with the marine research and the photographs.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
I strongly feel JSPS should send candidate who could speak Japanese and English. Only then will the students enjoy the experience.
