1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
Being a professional teacher it is always stimulating to meet students and talk to them about the research and work one is involved in especially if it will inspire and guide them in deciding what to do for themselves in the future.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
Being simple and straightforward and emphasizing the principles with local examples which they could easily relate to and photographs / maps of the areas I was talking about. I was also very slow in speaking because I knew their English was not very good
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
No I did not find it difficult giving the lecture in English because I had prepared myself to speaking much slowly and using photographs to explain issues. I think lecturers need to be slow and should themselves have very good grip of English. Lastly lecturers need to use as many pictures and photos as necessary.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I think that this is a very good enlightening exercise and many JSPS fellows should be encouraged to participate in it. Even as a teacher I learnt a lot from these students.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Yes because it showed the level of appreciation of the African development issues by high school students from a developed country and of course very unique to Japan.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
I think the students learnt a lot about Africa in general and Uganda in particular and realized that despite too many challenges in Africa there is a potential for development.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
Even if the research we are involved as JSPS is very advanced there is need for the lectures to be as simple as possible because we face two challenges in giving these lectures one is language and the other the subject matter. So try to be as simple as possible and use as many audio visual aids as possible / necessary. If one does not have teaching experience there is need to get some tips during the preparation
