1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
I wanted to reach out to high school students and instill on them the exciting research work that I have been conducting. At the same time, I wanted to evaluate their response in order to gage the relevance of my research topic to the general public.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
I found that in order to prepare an interesting and engaging presentation, a lot of attention to detail is needed. Interaction with the audience and interesting factual tidbits played a role in capturing their attention throughout the lecture.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
Students are highly impressionable. So it is important to connect with them at their level, meaning to find out what their interest are and then engage them with an interesting lecture. A lot can be learned from Japanese television programs hosted by popular artistes.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I was pleasantly surprised by the willingness of the students to volunteer during my presentation.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Yes, in preparing the presentation, I learned a lot of details of my research work which I would have otherwise overlooked.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
First of all, they are exposed to research activities at higher learning institutions. Second, they get to meet foreign scientist and interact with them.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
Don't worry too much about the presentation slides, instead concentrate on the delivery of your presentation.
