Comments from Dr. Sahu

1.  What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

To offer an understanding of very important issues of ozone and climate change to the students. I find this an opportunity to explain the direct importance in the life. I am also motivated to give this lecture knowing the fact that they are used to words like ozone and climate, but many of them do not much about these.

2.  To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

Before the lecture I communicated to a teacher about the interest and knowledge of topic (science and my country) which I presented. Then with simple English with many figures I used power point slides.

3.  Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

I felt it was not so difficult to make presentation using simple and slow English. Advices for future lectures: Give little more time for both presentations and for questions. Use simple and slow English. Ask your colleague (better who knows about the topics of lecture) for assisting during the lecture.

4.  Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

Truly impressed I and my colleague are very much satisfied, after receiving so many questions from the students about the lecture. Coordinator did wonderful job by circulating our lecture documents to the students beforehand.

5.  Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

I feel more motivated to pursue my carrier linked directly to human impact and need. Interaction with students also provided me the skill of presentations to common people. I also feel to give such lectures when I return back to my home country.

6.  In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

I have points here: I came to know that many students know many facts about the ozone and climate but not in detail so they asked many doubts about their understating. They also seem to be satisfied to know the advances in experiments and measurements in the atmospheric sciences To know the history and future of my topic (ozone and climate) of research. They also came to know about the lifestyle of tribal community in India.

7.  Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

Please, Use simple and slow English Bring many figures and rarely use the text and plots Give scientific example experienced in daily life Request a translator (an early stage Japanese researcher) happen to know about the topic of lecture.
