1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
I recognize that the high school students and young generation will become the leaders of scientific societies in the world. I also realize that JSPS is giving pavements for future science leaders. JSPS Science Dialogue program may be a transformation of young students with the participation of JSPS post-doctoral research fellows to fuel their interests into the world of science creativities. So, I myself think that this program will give me an opportunity to participate in such challenging activities of JSPS.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
It is well known that young students are active, energetic, smart, and full of creativity. I also realize that it will be more beneficial if I can give them a chance to get certain involvement in my lecture. The young students naturally learn more in the environment of learning by doing. So in preparing my lecture, I paid an attention how to get involvement of students in my lecture. The demonstration for using far infrared camera and certain real world applications of my research were emphasized. I also took into account the importance of communication in English to Japanese students especially for me not being a native English speaker.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
First I thought it would be difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students. So I thoroughly made the preparation of my lecture under the guidance of my host professor, Prof. Hiromitsu Hama. I also gathered information about the English knowledge of Japanese high school students particularly from the school where I will be giving the lecture. So finally, I did not find any difficulties to give lectures in English to Japanese students. I think that it would be fruitful and beneficial to all if we can place emphasis on ? information about the students and the school where lecture will be given, ? choice of research topics that will be suitable to high school students. It would be useful if we keep in mind the importance of communications in English with Japanese students.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
With regard to participating in this program, I deeply felt that "I was very pleased". Even though Universities and high schools are different in academic atmosphere, the common fact is that we all are learners and promoters of nature with respect to science promotions. This program is an integral and significant part of science promotion as JSPS stands for.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Certainly, this program was meaningful in terms of my fellowship activities. Researchers grow research plants from which research crops are to be reaped by the whole society. This program made possible to share the knowledge of Research Fellows with the outside world especially here with the high school students. I think that this program stimulates the post-doctoral research fellows to gain research inputs for the outcomes of the fellow's future research which will be realistic and meaningful to the society.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
The students are benefited from the program in many ways. It will trigger their eagerness to improve and widen their knowledge of science and English communications. As potential scientists, they can come up with ideas of creativity in new science promotions. They will have a chance to study and learn what the researchers are doing in what kind of research activities.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
Generally speaking, the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program is a remarkable milestone in the road to the promotion of science. The name "JSPS Science Dialogue" itself is full of science meanings and hidden facts which to be discovered. It promotes the whole world of science. It would be useful if future participants in the program can move forward to the better society by participating actively.
