1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
For having been awarded this fellowship thanks to the gratitude of the Japanese people and government, I wanted to give something back to the people by helping the education of young people.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
Most attention was given to coordinate and adjust the content of the presentation to the students level of knowledge, in close cooperation with the teachers of the host school.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
Given the above preparation, the lecture was a great success for all parties involved. My advice to the lecture would be to keep the content of the lecture brief, well circumscribed and concise, and allow plenty of time for translation and student questions.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I was very impressed by the support from Warabi High School. Not only did a delegation of teachers vist me in advance at my work place, going together with me through a drafted version of the presentation giving vital advice, but also organizing this lecture extraordinarily well at the school itself, this includes preparation and motivation of students, provision of facilities (room, technical equipment) and a very welcoming atmosphere.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Preparing the lecture helped me to clarifying some of the theoretical concepts of the disease I am researching, helping in drafting the introduction chapters of my PhD thesis.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
The students got a good introduction into the human immune system, and the practice and difficulties of bone marrow transplantation. Many questions were raised from the side of the side of the students not only about immunology, but also about donating bone marrow, and thoughts were stimulated about may be joining the bone marrow donor registry themselves.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
This was overall a very positive experience not to be missed not only from a scientific point of view but also with regards to understanding between people, countries and cultures.
