1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
When I got the letter regarding the JSPS Science Dialogue program, I though that this is nice opportunity to encourage the high school student to consider careers in engineering and at least to take an active interest in and educate themselves about engineering.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
I have the greatest attention to how I could make the presentation easy to understand to the high school student. I have added more visual aids than using scientific terms such that they could find it interesting. For example, I had very little information about my actual research project because it is hard to explain to a non-engineer but I have demonstrated some of my research results.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
Yes, I found that it is difficult to deliver lecture in English to the Japanese students. I could not be able to conduct my lecture in Japanese. My host researcher kindly was with me during the lecture and he explained the key terms of the presentation to the students. I realized that if I could have enough knowledge in Japanese language or the students would be able to understand English, the lecture would be more interactive.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I really enjoyed the time of delivering lecture and discussion. Although so many students asked me questions regarding my research as well as my country, I felt that the students are shy to explore themselves.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
I think it was meaningful in terms of how to explain my research to others who might not have much background. The interaction with the community is also important and the cultural exchange is also very valuable for both the researchers and students.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
I hope some the students will get thinking about going into fields where they can apply their research and hard work towards the signal processing field, or other fields which greatly benefit society.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
It is better to deliver guidance to the lecturer prior to preparing the lecture materials regarding the level of scientific knowledge of the attendees to the lecture. I highly recommend participating in this program to make interesting to get a glimpse of what a Japanese high school is like.
