Comments from Dr. Pahadi

1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

I have had a chance to visit few high schools in Miyagi Prefecture in various kinds of culture exchange program from SIRA and MIA. This kind of activities promoted me further to take participated such kind of program. Therefore, I am interested about the JSPS Science Dialogue Program as well.

2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

First of all, It is very obvious that the understanding of English in high school level is still poor but gradually improving. Then, I thought, English should be very simple and it can be easily understandable by students. Therefore, I try to use simple English in my talk and sometime used Japanese translation for better understanding. In few slides, I have provided information both in English and Japanese language as well.

3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

I have no problems for giving lecture in English. But I realize that students may have problem for understanding my talk with limited time frame. To make them easy, I spoke both in Japanese and English. Thus, this type of program should increase vigorously which in turn will improve the English understanding level as well as cultural exchanges.

4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

To be honest, the program was good and exciting. I enjoyed the opportunity immensely as well. This type of program gave me an opportunity to know the Japanese high school education system and interact with them friendly.

5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

This type of program is meaningful for both of us in terms of scientific knowledge as well as cultural exchange. Furthermore, JSPS fellow can understand the Japanese schooling system as well. Moreover, both students and teachers will benefit to understand the latest technologies in the field of science.

6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

Students can understand the scientific development and learn the education systems, cultures in foreign countries and improve the way of English speaking, presentation skills, etc. Finally, they may have good motivation toward this type of program and give them a chance to interact with foreign persons which is very rare for them. This is how the student can get benefited from this type of program.

7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

I enjoyed the opportunity immensely. Visiting a Japanese school was something interesting and it was much different than what I expected. We have to prepare the lecture material in simplest and easiest way which they can understand properly.
