Comments from Dr. Khatri

1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

I am always keen to interact with young students, who are new buds for future of science and technology. They desire to know about progress in science and technology. I thought this is right opportunity for me to interact with students. My talk was on very fundamental aspects of Nanoscience & technology and I wanted them to know fundamental of Nano-scale and its applications.

2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

I started my talk with very elementary points by giving very simple examples, which are generally happened in daily life, so students can understand easily. However the mid part of my talk was bit technical, but I added some very interesting images, pictures and examples to concentrate student's attention for the talk and allow them to understand.

3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

I didn't find any difficulty giving my lecture in English. I spoke little slowly, so students can understand that what I am talking and explaining. However I don't know how much students could understand my talk. Good point of my talk was that my colleague Prof. K. Murase also given some explanation in Japanese language, when we felt that students are not understanding a particular part of the talk in english. Language Interpreter role is very important.

4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

I think the program is a very important to introduce high school students to advanced research in science and technology and its impact on daily life, which may help them to think for their better future pathway.

5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

Yes, This was very meaningful, particularly my lecture point of view. My research major is Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Still many people particularly school level students don't have much knowledge about that. This type of opportunity is also worthy for researchers, to spread their knowledge among young students. I am highly acknowledged to JSPS for conducting this type of program to make awareness about research advancement in high school students.

6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

By giving talk in high school does motivate the students to come-up for advance science and technology and make them to think for long-term goal to become researcher. Secondly they also get inspired to talk in English and to understand the impact of english on science and technology.

7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

A. Talk should be very clear, brief and easy to understand.
B. Use more examples with schemes, diagrams, photos etc to explain the technical part.
C. Talk very slowly.
D. During the talk interact with students.
