1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
I decided to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program because it gave me the opportunity to encourage and educate the next generation of Japanese scientists.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
Greatest attention was given to the level of technical content in the lecture. I
wanted the students to benefit from the lecture. Simple English words were used in the slides. Also, Japanese translation for English words that I thought might be difficult for the students were provided.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
I did not find it difficult to lecture in English. My advice to future lecturers is to speak slowly using simple words. Also, repetition of important points is essential for the students to understand the lecture.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
It was a pleasure for me to participate in the program. The whole process from the preparation of the lecture material to its delivery was an education for me.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
It was useful in the sense that as JSPS fellows it is part of our duty and professional development to educate younger scientists on the importance of our respective disciplines.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
In my opinion, I think the students gained some confidence in their abilities to become competent scientists. This was evident in the way some of them answered the questions posed to them.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
I strongly recommend that future participants go through past lectures as well as consult with their Japanese colleagues before preparing the lecture materials. Although participation in the program means less time for research, the joy of teaching the next generation of professionals who will be responsible for future significant discoveries is one to be experienced.
