1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
As I said before, I've never had such an experience and I think it is very meaningful to pass my knowledge to young students to let them understand some state-of-the-art of earthquake engineering.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
I made some small toys which are helpful to understand the basic definitions in earthquake engineering.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
No, actually it is amazing that most students are very good at English. I think the lecture in the future should be more interactive. Not only the teacher but also the students could propose their idea. Discussion may be a good pattern.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
It is very good. I am impressed that the students showed so much interest in earthquake engineering. The reason I guess might be the frequent earthquake in Japan. Everyone does care about their safety, especially their houses which is strong enough or not?
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
For sure it is meaningful.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
They have a global idea about the effect of the earthquake on the buildings, and the damage mechanisms of the buildings. They also learned which kinds of houses are not good, and which are better to resist huge seismic force.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
To future lecturers majoring in engineering, I would like to say that please make your presentation much simpler than your thought. The students do not have so much knowledge in engineering. However, for those belong to science, you can prepare some professional information. The students there are really good at science.
