Comments from Dr.Saqib

1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

As a teacher by profession I have a passion to speak to the young students. So, this interest actually stimulated me to speak to the sharp Japanese students.

2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

With respect to the contents of the presentation, I tried to create a balance among three things; introduction to my country and its relations with Japan, introduction to my research work and the importance of my work in the context of the society and environment. In delivering the lecture, I tried to explain the things in a very simple way and in very simple English.

3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

I did not find it difficult to give a lecture in English to the Japanese students. The students were very well disciplined and sharp.
I will suggest the future lecturers to be simple and slow in their presentation. It is also good to make the contents of the lecture simple and very near to the daily life which the students can easily comprehend, instead of showing very basic science which has a remote link to the daily life. If there is some thing very necessary and at the same time of advanced level, it is better to give some common background of that matter.

4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

It was very nice to have this experience to speak to very good Japanese students. It was impressing.

5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

Yes, I think if I would not have had this opportunity, I would have been ignorant of the very good educational system that Japan has. So, with respect to the understanding of the Japanese culture it was a rare opportunity.

6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

I think they would have got introduction following things:
1. English language
2. My country, Pakistan
3. The work at my laboratory, and
4. The importance of the work being done at my laboratory

7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

It is a very good and rare opportunity and any body who is given this opportunity should take full advantage of this. S/he can introduce his or her culture and s/he can learn about Japanese culture. It is also advisable to keep in view that our audience are high school students.
