Comments from Dr. Kidane

1.  What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?

During the JSPS December 2006 orientation program in Tokyo I filled out a questionnaire in which I responded to voluntarily participate in the “JSPS Science dialogue program based on which the JSPS contacted me afterwards. I give seminars for students and staffs at the University and I communicate my scientific findings at international conferences. Therefore, I had in my mind that communicating my research results at super science high schools might inspire students to do research and keep their scientific desire to the highest level.

2.  To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

Well, I know from my experiences elsewhere in the world the topic of my lecture may not be familiar for high school students as such. Because I know courses on the subject are offered only at a college level. In this regard, I requested the school administration to provide me with some information on the level of the courses already offered to students. Accordingly, I prepared some helpful introduction and made a simple presentation of my scientific results.

3.  Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

No, I didn’t. English is my second language and as such I have my own accent to it and I understand the difficulties of other non-native English speakers including Japanese. I speak slowly but clearly and I hope this is important to communicate with non-native English students.

4.  Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

My impression is very positive. I enjoyed it very much. I feel to have contributed something towards the motivation of these future scientists to pursue their higher education.

5.  Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

Well, I got the JSPS fellowship and while I am in the fellowship I suppose it is good some how I contribute to the Japanese education system. In fact the time I take for preparation is insignificant but its impact for the students could be great.

6.  In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

It may not be easy for Super-science high school students to completely understand the content of the lecture but definitely encourage them develop a strong desire in research and enhances their interest to communicate science in English in the future.

7.  Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

Well, one of the objectives of the program is to deepen the student’s international understanding by interacting with fellows. It is always good to begin presentation with some brief introduction about the country of the fellow. In addition to their findings I suggest that fellow give views of their critics in case there exist a various hypothesis.
