1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
In my opinion, JSPS fellows have a role in extending our scientific knowledge to the community. Young high school students are a good chance to do so.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
I tried to give the presentation in the simplest words for students to understand what I am doing during my JSPS Fellowship. This is not an easy task. I have had that chance to do the same in national and international meetings to medical doctors and scientist, but this time it was a challenge.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
I think it was a kind of difficult not for me but for the students to have the presentation in English. It was difficult to follow what is being said about the topic and understand English language at the same time. Then I tried to give part of the lecture in Japanese, and I think they felt more relaxed.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I think that all JSPS fellows should take the Science Dialog Program as a chance and challenge to test our skills. It is our duty to communicate our work not only to the scientific community but to the general public.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Certainly it was. It helped me to gather ideas and in some way, to start organizing my research results.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
It is my understanding that the objective of the Science Dialog program is not to give high school students the latest scientific information available in every specific field, but to expose these students to young foreign researchers to help them to have a kind of model for their future. In that way, we may serve as a motivation for them.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
This is a great opportunity for all JSPS fellows. Perhaps the majority of us will be occupying academic positions in the near future. The program is therefore a good starting point for those of us interested in education.
