1. What prompted you decide to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program?
I decided to participate in the "JSPS Science Dialogue" program because I like to transmit knowledge to students. I gave since many years private lecture for high school students in France, and I really like that. I was also interested to know another education system than French, an other way of thinking
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
In preparing the lecture, I tried to be teaching, educational ; and to be at the same level than students know about physics. But I don not know precisely what students know about physics in second grade in Japan ( I know about program of science in France, but it seems that the knowledge is little bit different).
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
I did not find really difficult to give a lecture in English, but maybe for high school students they do not used to listen lecture in English.
I mean, physics in difficult to understand and English is also difficult to understand during one hour.
After my lecture, I think it is better to make a shorter lecture (less than one hour), and speak slowly in English.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I am happy to participating in the program; it was a great experience for me; I hope it was also good experience for students too and they had an overview about the research in high energy astrophysics.
For me, It was good thing in my fellowship to meet some high school students (maybe some of them will be researcher in a few years!). And I really think research has to be explain to the public (young students and also public in general), and why research is important for a country. It is meaningful for me to join this program for these reasons.
5. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
I hope students will wonder about science, be more curious about Nature, and develop curiosity not only for science, but for everything they like, and they will learn how to learn by themselves.
6. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
If I have to give some advice for future participants, I think I will say: make a short talk (not too many slides) and speak slowly for students;
Also, to have more contact with the professor (before the lecture) about what he expects of the lecture. The last advice is to give lecture for few students (2 or 3 classes maximum) to make the lecture more interactive between students and the participant.
