Comments from Dr. Bollineni

1.  What prompted you decide to participate in the “JSPS Science Dialogue” program?

Being a science researcher, participating in this type of programmes is a good practice to develop knowledge and create awareness among science students. Moreover, the topic is mostly related to environmental aspects where consuming food/water contaminated with heavy metals causes several health problems, so it is necessary to explain the possible impacts on the environment an remedies to be taken to avoid such problems. In view of this reason, I have decided to deliver a lecture to science students.

2.  To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

I came to know that from Japanese friends, understanding English in high school level is little week. Then, I thought, English should be very simple and it can be easily understandable by students, that's why I have used simple English in my talk. In few slides, I have provided information both in English and Japanese language for easy understanding.

3.  Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

I didn't find any difficulty giving lecture in English, but I don't know how much students could understand my talk, since time was only 45 minutes, I spoke little fast, that might have disturbed them from clear understanding.
In the future lecturers, it is necessary to prepare slides in both languages (English and Japanese) and slide number should restrict to minimum numbers (up to 20 numbers) and needs to explain very slowly, so that students can understand clearly.

4.  Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

In fact, its very good program to organize in high schools, one way students understand the scientific development, while foreigners will have a chance to see the facilities, student's eagerness, etc. Also, students will have a chance to interact with foreigners and learn the education systems in the foreign countries and understand the ways of English speaking, presentation skills, etc.

5.  Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

I think its very meaningful, JSPS fellows will be conducting research in different areas of science and delivering lectures in high schools will benefit both students and teachers to understand the latest technologies in the science.

6.  In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

By doing such advanced programs in high school, motivate the students to develop strong goals/aims in early stages of their life to achieve big things or to become a good researcher, etc. Whatever, we teach to the students in early stages that make them very strong and remain permanently in their mind. So giving lecturers at high school level is very useful to develop career of students.

7.  Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

It is necessary to prepare slides in both languages (English and Japanese) for easy understanding of the contents. Since time is limited, the future presenters should restrict slides to minimum numbers and explain more clearly even from the basics. The presenters should include some figures in the presentation to understand the contents clearly.
