1. What prompted you decide to participate in the “JSPS Science Dialogue” program?
I decided to participate to this program because it was a good opportunity to enter in a Japanese school and to meet Japanese students.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
I tried to mix scientific issues (introduction to my work, in France and in Japan) and non-scientific issues (what is research, what is a post-doc, why did I come to Japan...). I do not know if it matched the expectations of the professors or not.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
It was not difficult to give this lecture in English. I have the impression that the students' level was good, and my English is very basic since I am not a native speaker. Furthermore I could benefit from the translation by my supervisor, and from the preparation by the biology teacher : he explains the key-words of my research work to the students before my presentation. I think it helped a lot.
My advice : avoid technical words.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
It was a very good experience.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
I think it is a duty for researchers to explain their work to non-researchers. In that sense, it was very meaningful in terms of my fellowship activities.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
I hope they could get an image of how research work, and of how exciting it is to live abroad.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
My advice to future participants : prepare only the half of what you would like to say !
