1. What prompted you decide to participate in the “JSPS Science Dialogue” program?
As a researcher, I believe that shearing your knowledge to the others, to the society, is very important. Especially, young people I think need such a dialogue for science, and probably more important for them, for communication purposes.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
Giving the background of the students, I thought appropriate to make mostly an introductory presentation into the subject (seismology), making reference of course to my own studies/research.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
The students had a rather good English level, in my case. However, I thought appropriate to write some words or short explanations in Japanese in the slides. Also, sometimes, besides the English word, I was mentioning the Japanese translation. Also, good graphs/figures are many times better than words in order to be understood.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I think was a good experience and I enjoyed.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Yes, to some extent.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
Improving communication skills and hopefully some more knowledge on earthquakes.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
Well, as I said before, most important for me was to make myself understood and to show why science, geophysics in particular, can be fascinating.
