Comments from Dr. Fedorova

1.  What prompted you decide to participate in the “JSPS Science Dialogue” program?

I like to teach students. And it was very interesting for me to meet Japanese high school students and make lecture in English. I think, it is very useful experience for me.

2.  To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

I have tried to make lecture as easy as possible and show at least one picture on every slide. Also, I have tried to avoid use many special terms.

3.  Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

Yes, it was rather difficult. The main problem is to describe in simple words our complex study. Students need special biological knowledge to understand our project.

4.  Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

I'm honored with participating in this program. Undoubtedly, it is very important experience for me. And it was very interesting to learn about Japanese system of Education and compare with Russian one.

5.  Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

No. It just was interest for me personally.

6.  In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

It will be very good to listen to English from different people with various accents. I think that students can know a new material about usual things. Also students will know more about science and scientists themselves. Perhaps, such lectures could influence on the choice of future student's profession.

7.  Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

It will be very useful to give key expressions and their translations BEFORE lecture. You even could repeat key expressions at the beginning of your lecture - students can tune in your voice and accent. Please, speak slowly. You can use humor in your lecture - it is always good in remembering and communications.
