Comments from Dr. Baroch

1.  What prompted you decide to participate in the “JSPS Science Dialogue” program?

In my case, I would say, it was mainly curiousness and a little bit challenge which motivated me to participate in this program. Another reason was the opportunity to pass some ideas to young people and at the same time to be enriched by some new experiences.

2.  To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?

I tried to pay most attention on the level and style of the presentation. Since all of us are now in the research environment, for me it was a little bit difficult to put my self to their age and imagine what kind of lecture might be interesting for them. So I tried to prepare my lecture in popular way and tried to show many connections between the results of our research and things and situations that are very usual in their ordinary life.

3.  Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?

I have to say, I very enjoyed the lecture and I found not so much difficulties in giving the lecture in English, although I can guess that it was not easy for them to understand all. In case of any advices, I recommend to slow down your speech and use as ordinary vocabulary as possible. To keep students attention is maybe good from to time to time interrupt your speech by some short interesting story or note, maybe even in Japanese.

4.  Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?

My impression is predominantly very positive and I'm really glad I have got an opportunity to participate in this program. I even hope this program become more usual and in future there will be some possibility to give not only one but set of such lectures.

5.  Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?

Well, if I look at it only from the point of my research activities, it was not so meaningful, since it took certain time to prepare for it and you cannot expect any scientific suggestions through the discussion with students but for me there was another great merit connected with possibility to sketch our ideas and work to young people. It is also important way how to attract young people for research, and in my opinion, such activities should fulfill even larger part in our fellowship program.

6.  In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?

I think, they experienced, hopefully, some interesting lectures showing new and advanced results in present research fields which are moreover given by person from different culture background. This might enlarge their view on the life and motivate them in their present and future study. Also might influence them when they will decide about their future profession. Besides, they are also able to practice they language ability.

7.  Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?

First of all, I want to say, this program is very interesting experience and I can warmly recommend it to all fellows. To them, who will participate in future, I recommend to prepare they lecture in very popular way, with a lot of illustrations and for lecture it self to choose easy vocabulary and try to speak slowly.
