1. What prompted you decide to participate in the “JSPS Science Dialogue” program?
I wanted to talk about the environmental problems with the high school student and hope that they have awareness of the environmental damage caused by the burning of fossil fuels. As a Korean who has stayed in Japan, I wanted to have opportunity to introduce Korean culture and society to Japanese high school students.
2. To what did you give greatest attention in preparing and giving the lecture?
I thought over and paid most of my attention about how the students can be interested in my presentation and understand easily. To give them a better understand, i used many pictures, photos and graphs.
3. Did you find it difficult to give a lecture in English to Japanese students? Could you give some advice to future lecturers on how to facilitate communication with Japanese students?
I lectured in Japanese.
4. Could you give your impression with regard to participating in this program?
I am proud of participating this program watching students dedicated to providing many questions paying attention to my research. I hope my presentation would give them a chance to reconsider the environmental problems.
5. Was it meaningful in terms of your fellowship activities?
Sure. It was very hard work to explain what I had studied to high school students, not to researchers. However, having a time to consider about people's better understanding was meaningful, too. At the same time, it was also precious opportunity to think about my future research.
6. In what ways do you think the students benefited from the program?
It would be a good chance to think about how the study of basic science in the high school is used for actual research and how it could be practical to have contact with actual researchers and their experiences.
7. Could you give some overall advice or comments to future participants in the program?
When giving presentations, it is wise to take into consideration the audience, in this case high school students. Using visual aids helps the students pay attention to the presentation. Most students not only asked about the research but were interested in the foreign culture that is my heritage. It could be helpful to students to give a lecture about foreign culture for a while.
