Background

The Nobel Museum in Sweden is putting on a traveling expedition that will tour countries around the world to introduce and display materials related to the life and work of the innovator and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel. The Nobel Prize hails its 110th anniversary in December 2011. It was the strong desire of the former Nobel Museum director Prof. Svante Lindqvist that this traveling exhibition be held in Japan on this commemorative juncture of the Museum’s history.

In 2002, the Nobel Museum’s traveling exhibition was held in Tokyo under JSPS’s sponsorship. Building upon this legacy, JSPS is carrying out the Project to Commemorate the 110th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize, under which it is preparing a platform for receiving the Nobel Museum’s 2011 traveling exhibition in Japan and will hold an exhibit of the achievements of the Japanese Nobel laureates in conjunction with it.

Purpose

With the advent of a knowledge-driven society, competition in areas of science and technology is intensifying around the world. This gives rise to an urgent need for Japan to foster researchers and technologists who can shoulder the next generation S&T advances. Four Japanese researchers won the Nobel Prize in 2008 and two more won it in 2010, presenting an opportunity to deepen the public’s interest in and understanding of the meaning and role of science and technology and of academic pursuit. This parallels JSPS’s objective for holding the Project to Commemorate the 110th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize—that is, to promote a better understanding within Japanese society of the meaning and role of science and technology and of the academic pursuit that underscores it.
