FAQ related to the JSPS Invitation Fellowships for Research in Japan
(Long-term)

Q1. What is the purpose of the JSPS Invitation Fellowships for Research in Japan (Long-term)?
 
  A1. The JSPS Invitation Fellowship for Research in Japan (Long-term) is offered to promote international scientific cooperation and exchange. It allows researchers in Japan to invite colleagues from other countries to Japan to participate in cooperative research activities at their universities and research institutes.


Q2. Fellowship Tenure
 
  Q2-1. What is the length of the Fellowship tenure?
  A2-1. It is for 61 days to 10 months, not less or more.
 
  Q2-2. May I split the period of my stay in Japan?
  A2-2. No. You must stay in Japan continuously during your Fellowship. However, you may be permitted a temporary absence for related research purposes.
 
  Q2-3. May I change my starting date from that indicated in my host’s application?
  A2-3. Yes, so long as you start your Fellowship within the designated Japanese fiscal year.


Q3. Shortening the Fellowship
 
  Q3-1. May I shorten my Fellowship to a cumulative period of less than 61 days?
  A3-1. No, you may not because the fellowship is premised upon a 61 day or longer stay.
 
  Q3-2. What happens to my allowances if I should shorten my tenure?
  A3-2. Your allowances will be reduced in half-month units. You will have to reimburse JSPS for any already-paid allowances rendered unused.
Reductions are calculated as follows:
Accumulative leave Amount reduced
16 - 30 days 0.5 month
31 - 45 days 1 month
46 - 60 days 1.5 month


Q4. Extending the Fellowship
 
  Q4-1. My tenure is for less than 10 months. May I extend it to up to 10 months?
  A4-1.

No, you may not.

If it is to continue your research. However, JSPS will not pay you any allowances after your tenure has expired.

Your host scientist is responsible for taking all administrative procedures related to a change in your Fellowship tenure.



Q5. Temporally absence
 
  Q5-1. May I take a temporary absence if it reduces my cumulative time in Japan to less than 61 days?
  A5-1. No, you may not.


Q6. Allowance payment
 
  Q6-1. What allowances will be covered under the Fellowship?
  A6-1. The Fellowship covers your roundtrip ticket, maintenance allowance, domestic travel allowance, research expenses, and overseas travel and accident insurance.
 
  Q6-2. Should I buy my own tickets?
  A6-2.

No. They will be issued to you through the JSPS Fellowship Desk of our designated travel agency.

JSPS does not reimburse Fellows for air tickets purchased by themselves, nor does it provide airfares in the form of cash payments.

 
  Q6-3. How will I receive my monthly allowances?
  A6-3. They will either be deposited into your bank account in Japan or into your host's bank account.
 
  Q6-4. How do I apply for the overseas travel and accident insurance?
  A6-4. Fellows do not need to apply for this insurance. However, your host scientist must submit a form to begin the start of coverage.
 
  Q6-5. Will my host receive some allowance?
  A6-5. Yes. JSPS provides host sciences with an allowance of 50,000 yen to cover their costs of hosting a Fellow.
 
  Q6-6. Is any support provided for dependents?
  A6-6. No. Under this Fellowship program, JSPS does not provide support for dependents.


Q7. Alien Registration
 
  Q7-1. How do I resister ?
  A7-1. Under Japan's Alien Registration Law, foreigners who will stay in Japan for 90 days or longer must register at the city, ward or town office where they reside within 90 days of their arrival in Japan. Therefore, it is necessary for Fellows under this long-term fellowship program to register. An alien registration card will be issued to you within 2-3 weeks after registration.


Q8. National Health Insurance
 
  Q8-1. How do I apply for National Health Insurance Program?
  A8-1.

Foreigners are eligible for National Health Insurance who (1) are registered under the Alien Registration Law and (2) have stayed in Japan for more than one year as stipulated under the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. Visiting researchers whose stay under the fellowship program is less than one year are not eligible for the National Health Insurance.

There are, however, cases when a fellow will stay in Japan after the completion of his/her tenure for research or other purposes. If an extended stay of one year or longer is authorized by the immigration authorities, it may be possible for the researcher to join the National Insurance Program. Inquiry should be made at one’s ward, city, town or village office.
