Funding Program for World-Leading Innovative  R&D on Science and Technology(FIRST Program)

FIRST Reinforcement

To complement and reinforce the FIRST Program, FIRST Acceleration and Outreach Programs are implemented as components of the Strategic Fund for Strengthening Leading-edge Research and Development.

FIRST Acceleration Program

This program works to accelerate and strengthen the R&D activities carried out by core researchers on selected topics under the FIRST Program. Funding in an amount of about ¥9.7 billion is being disbursed by JSPS in FY 2010 under this program.

♦ Grants
Grants have been awarded for 26 projects at 14 institutions in a total amount of ¥9.686 billion.

Grantees are selected and the amount of their grants set by the Cabinet Office’s Council for Science and Technology Policy. For more information about the projects and grants, please see the Cabinet Office’s webpage (Japanese only).

FIRST Outreach Program

This program supports the wide dissemination of information on the FIRST Program and on the activities and outcomes of the core researchers and projects funded under it via such means as international symposiums aimed mainly at researchers and outreach symposiums geared to interested members of the general public. Funding in an amount of about ¥300 million is being disbursed by JSPS in FY 2010 under this program.

♦ Grants
Grants have been awarded for 17 symposiums held by 11 institutions in a total amount of ¥318.98 million.
