The Center performs the following four functions:

1 ) Conducts surveys and research on science promotion policies
2 ) Conducts surveys and research on scientific trends
3 ) Administer project selections and evaluations over a broad spectrum of JSPS programs
4 ) Makes proposals and provides advice on JSPS programs and operations

Items 1 & 2

To ascertain research trends, the Center conducts surveys of science-policymaking bureaus and science-promotion agencies of other countries, universities and research institutions.

Items 3

The Center selects examiners to review applications for JSPS programs, such as Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI), Research Fellowships for Young Scientists, International Scientific Cooperation Programs, and presides over selection boards. So as to maintain the eligibility of the Center’s researchers to apply for Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, they do not directly review the grant applications.

Items 4

Meetings of the Center's senior program officers and program groups are held to formulate proposals or advice based on researcher needs with regard to the full spectrum of JSPS's operation.

These functions embedded in the program officer infrastructure of the Center’s operation make it possible to better reflect researchers’ needs and specialists’ views in achieving more effective implementation of JSPS’s operations and programs.
