  8. Description of and results from the invitation
  9. At November 16th Prof. Berry Marshall have visited at Japan Society for the Promotion of Science office. Dr. Marshall met Mr. Motoyuki Ono (president of JSPS) and Mr. Hirochika Inoue (Inspector General of JSPS) and had an important discussion about the present and the future of the Helicobacter pylori infection. It was a very good meeting for understanding the situation of the Helicobacter pylori research. Helicobacter pylori infection is going to be very important issue in Japan. Dr. Marshall expressed his gratitude for his invitation at this important time in Japan.

We are very honored that Prof. Barry Marshall@visited Oita University and and some other Universities to gave us the memorial lecture. Also he gave many important comments to the members of Consensus Meeting of Japanese Society for Helicobacter Research ( JSHR ). As the result, about 2500 people participated the Nobel Laureatefs Commemorative Lecture.

We would like to hearty thank the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science ( JSPS ) for giving us a great chance to invite Prof. Robin Warren and to give us a chance to reconsider the scientific promotion in Japan throughout the 21 century.

He lectured the discovery and the development of Helicobacter pylori with his honest character and we understood that the great discovery is based on the daily enthusiasm and an effort, not based on the accident. Prof. Robin Warren emphasized that the new concept to be accepted, one should continue doing research to confirm ones findings.

For his lecture, all of the audiences addressed great gratitude. Prof. Robin Warren intimately communicated many of the participants at the presidential dinner party at the annual meeting of JSHR.

  10. Contribution by the invitee to the host institute (e.g. inspiration to young scientists, internationalization of a host institute as a whole, etc.)
  11. Out of the extensive research into Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) conducted during these many years, two important achievements that bear particular mention are the development of H. pylori eradication as the basic treatment for peptic ulcers and the new approach for the infection/tumor sequence in stomach cancer and MALT lymphoma promoted by the study of persistent H. pylori infection, a slow bacterial infection.

These findings will be very important for Japanese people and other east Asian Countries. On these points, JSHR and host institute ( Oita University and others) were greatly encouraged. Moreover, Barry Marshall also emphasized that in the field of clinical science such as pathology, it is very important to make precise and accurate observation. These philosophical points of views impressed the audience very much.

Finally, Dr Barry Marshall strongly encouraged for the Japanese Society for Helicobacter Research to progress the many researches in this fields.
