Symposium on Giant Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Phuket 2008

JSPS hosted this Symposium on Giant Earthquakes and Tsunamis in Phuket from January 22 - 24, 2008 in cooperation with Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), and Disaster Prevention Research Forum and National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED). It was co-sponsored by the Science Council of Japan and the Science Council of Asia.

Attending the symposium were researchers in fields of science, engineering and sociology, mainly those who participated in the "Sumatra-scaled Giant Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster Mitigation" project, funded under MEXT's Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology, and the "JSPS-LIPI Joint Research on Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster" project, conducted under MEXT's Flexible International Exchange Program. At the symposium, three keynote addresses, 61 oral presentations, and three poster presentations were given. The participants shared a wide range of information on phenomena related to natural disasters and measures related to disaster prevention and reconstruction. They also established a highly interdisciplinary network. This very meaningful symposium compiled work undertaken over the three-year period of the project.
