Trilateral Workshop for S&T Cooperation Held
A Trilateral Workshop for S&T Cooperation, organized by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), was held at Kyusyu University (Fukuoka, Japan) on 5-6 March, 2007. The decision to convene this workshop was made at the first China-Japan-Korea Trilateral Ministerial Meeting on S&T Cooperation held on 12 January, 2007 in Seoul. The aim of the workshop was to explore the possible trilateral joint R&D projects in the field of environment and energy technology through a discussion among experts from the three countries. About 30 researchers and administrators from the three countries participated in the workshop. They discussed the following topics: (1) Harmful Algal Blooms in the East China Sea, (2) Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) R&D for Decentralized and Sustainable Water Reuse, (3) Impacts of Anthropogenic Aerosols on Climate in Asia, (4) Asian Scale Air Quality Modeling and Future Projection, (5) Extracting Resources from Biowastes, (6) Novel Conservation Process for Biomass Utilization Using Aqueous Systems, and (7) Environmental Management Technology for Sustainable Utilization of Environmental Resources in East Asia.
The outcome of these discussions was summarized and compiled into a policy proposal on the possible joint international R&D projects in the field of environment and energy technology that can be promoted by Japan, China and Korea in the future. In Japan, the policy proposal will be reflected in the projects of "The Asia S&T Strategic Cooperation Promotion Program (Joint R&D on Common Regional Issues)" and other international S&T cooperation programs.
The outcome of the workshop will be reported to the trilateral meeting (Ministerial meeting or Director-General meeting).
