"Workshop LIPI-JSPS on Earthquake" Held

The "Workshop LIPI-JSPS on Earthquake" was held in December 5th and 6th, 2006, at the Ambhara Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia, under the auspices of LIPI (Indonesian Institute of Sciences) and JSPS. The giant earthquake and tsunami of December 2004 off Sumatra Island, Indonesia, caused enormous disaster in the northwestern part of Indonesia. Motivated by this event, LIPI proposed JSPS to cooperatively promote new research projects on earthquakes and tsunamis. The purpose of the workshop was thus to make up cooperative research plans between Indonesia and Japan in the field of earthquake and tsunami in the future. Researchers from Hokkaido University, the University of Tokyo, Nagoya University, and AIST participated into the workshop from Japan. From Indonesia, researchers of LIPI and Bandung Institute of Technology participated into the workshop. After the concentrated discussion during the workshop, five research topics were adopted; crustal movement, paleo-seismology, tsunami, strong motion seismology and disaster preparedness. JSPS will support these research projects in the coming two years under the bilateral joint projects and the flexible international exchange program of the strategic program for building the Asia S&T Community.
