    Basically, young entomologists who will play an important role in the field of biological control and pest management in Asian countries were selected. Those who belong to universities or national institutes were given the highest priority upon selection. Candidates of the seminar were recruited through recommendation by lecturers. Applicants via announcement on the homepage were also accepted.

8. Achievements
1) Upon what concept was the seminar planned and organized? (As reference, attach lecture summaries and other related documents.)
The seminar was planned to promote a greater interest and understanding of the principles and practices concerning biological control. Thus, the seminar was organized with 1) keynote lectures, 2) basic lectures, and 3) laboratory practices. Presentation and discussion by young participants were also included to the seminar program for that purpose.

2) What results were achieved from an academic viewpoint? Please list them concretely.
The participants learned:
- Quantitative techniques used in the study of natural enemies; and
- The principles and practices of biological control.

3) What results were achieved in terms of international exchange and young researcher development?
The participants had an opportunity to learn the importance of discussing with researchers from the other countries. They also leaned the importance of having the communication skill in English.

9. What sort of specific activities may be expected of the seminar participants in the future?
At least some of the participants would play a key role in the field of biological control and pest management.
We also expect they would be international scientists.

10. Were the system and method of operating the seminar effective? Please note any specific suggestions your have for improving them?
We felt the duration of the seminar (11 days) was too short. However, some of the participants appeared to be exhausted during the seminar; eleven days could be too long for the participants who might have never been abroad. Therefore, it may be desirable to separate the seminar twice or three times, holding it for two or three consecutive years.

11. Please describe any other effects of the seminar that deserve special mention.
This sort of seminar would strategically be important to make it be recognized that Japan is desiring to strengthen its friendly relations with Asian countries.

<Impressions of Participants>

12. What sort of impressions or opinions were expressed by the lecturers?
All of our lecturers agreed that the seminar was successful and excellent; the seminar meets the current demand in Asia for developing environmentally friendly pest management.

13. Did you have the participants carry out a questionnaire or assessment? If so, what results did you obtain?
We carried out a questionnaire only to the participants from the foreign countries to get the proper evaluation of the seminar. We didn't have Japanese participants carry out a questionnaire. Because all of them were the students of Kyushu University and they managed the seminar actively.
As a whole, they agreed the importance and success of the seminar.

<Views and Comments on Program>

14. Please give us your comments and opinions on the seminar program itself. What did you think of JSPS's application recruitment period, timing of the selection notice, seminar funding by JSPS, method of seminar operation, or other elements of the program? Do you have any specific suggestions as to how any of these components can be improved?
Although we share much with Asian countries in the way of culture and values, Asia is so diverse in culture and values. We felt some of the regulations were a little bit fixed or stiff, which may cause some troubles with Asian people or which may bother greatly participants from Asian countries. Flexible management and practice may be required in many ways.
